Summary Profile
Joz Coetzer is National Head of the Finance, Projects and Banking
practice and has vast experience in the area of finance (debt and equity),
general banking (operational and regulatory) and financial services. Joz acts
for various foreign banks with local banking licences as well as most of the
local banks in South Africa, and specialises in finance and security
structures, which would include asset, project and/or infrastructure funding as
well as general finance.
Career
Joz began his career at Cliffe Dekker &Todd as a Candidate Attorney
in 1993. He was promoted to Associate in 1994. In 1995, Joz moved to Edward
Nathan Friedland as an Associate. In 1996, Joz returned to Cliffe Dekker
&Todd in the position of Senior Associate. He was promoted to Director in
1997. In September 2008 Joz became a Director of Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr.

Experience
- Acts for foreign banks with local banking licences such as HSBC, ABN
AMRO Bank, Standard Chartered Bank and Barclays Bank plc as well as The
Standard Bank of South Africa Ltd, Nedbank Ltd, ABSA Bank Ltd, Investec Ltd and
FirstRand Bank Ltd and other non-banking clients such as Transnet Ltd and Eskom
Ltd and amongst others, advises them in various funding structures, in regard
to amongst others, funding of black economic empowerment, projects and
infrastructure, acquisition of assets, management buy-outs as well as the
structuring of the security relating to such finance
- Devised new products for banks and other financial institutions which
would include the retail and wholesale bond market, insurance, pension fund and
derivative driven products as well as securitisation
- Involved in the setting up of the local operations of foreign banks
and advises various foreign and local banks in aspects of the Banks Act No. 94
of 1990, the Financial Advisory Intermediaries Act, No. 37 of 2002 and the
Collective Investment Schemes Control Act No. 45 of 2002
