Summary Profile
John Gomes has specialised in real estate law and transactions since
qualifying in 1970. John chairs the Cape Law Society Property Committee and is
the longest standing member of the Law Society of South African Property
Committee and as such, interfaces with the State and all other stakeholders in
property law.
In the early 1970's John became involved with the South Africa Property
Owners Association in its initiative to introduce legislation governing
horizontal ownership and, together with the various law societies of South
Africa, contributed to the amendment and updating and replacement of sectional
titles legislation from time to time. Today he is regarded as an authority on
the legislation and the social impact of condominium ownership.
In his role as consultant to major estate agencies in the Cape and
nationwide, he is the author of many of their standard documents of sale,
leases etc. He initiated the courses for candidate conveyancers which today
have become formalised under aegis of the Cape Town Attorneys Association. John
is active in professional affairs and development through the Law Society of
the Cape of Good Hope and the Law Society of South Africa
Career
John began his career in 1967 at Syfret Godlonton and Low and
subsequently as a Director of Syfret Godlonton Fuller Moore in 1975 and
Chairman in 1995. In 1998 Syfret Godlonton Fuller Moore joined the practice of
Cliffe Dekker Fuller Moore where John was appointed Deputy Chairman until 2002.
In September 2008 John became a Director of Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr.
